Former
Swiss Vatican Guards’ March to Rome:-
A group of former Swiss Vatican guards
arrived in Rome after re-enacting a
legendary march
from Switzerland undertaken 500 years
ago. Their arrival marked the start of
the events celebrating the 500th
anniversary of the founding of the “
smallest army in the world “.Some 70
former guardsmen , from 25 to 76 years
of age , marched for 28 days , covered
the same arduous 720 kilometre route
from Bellizona to the Vatican city .
The marchers received warm applause
along the way to their final
destination ,including a cheering
welcome in the central square of
historic Rome, the Piazza del Popolo.
The Pope welcomed them and addressed
them from the Vatican window “ In some
ways you can feel the emotions that
the first 150 Swiss Guards felt as
they reached the Eternal City on
January 22,1506 “ |
